Exotic hardwood flooring is still an option for those looking for something different and unique. While its popularity has waned over the years, Brazillian Cherry (Jatoba), Santos Mahogany (Cabreuva) and Tigerwood have remained as the three most popular exotic species. Acacia is also available and would primarily be found in the world of engineered hardwood flooring. Part of what makes exotic wood attractive are the brilliant colours, often showcasing brown’s, red’s, and orange’s. There is little uniformity to the look with a mix of colours scattered throughout. Some of the challenges associated with exotic hardwoods is the inevitable change in colour. Once exotic woods are installed, dramatic colour change can take place. Also, the sourcing of these materials, given that they are mostly from South America, is sometimes unclear which makes this category tricky when it comes to sustainable environmental practices. That being said, a reputable brand will always commit to properly sourced materials. Exotic hardwoods are available in both solid and engineered platforms. Always remember that having the proper relative humidity and temperature in one’s home is one of the most critical factors in maintaining your hardwood floors.
